Assistant or Associate Professor in Special Education

Position: The Department of Teaching and Learning at the University of Iowa invites applications for a tenure line faculty position at the rank of assistant or associate professor in the area of special education.

Description: The special education program at the University of Iowa serves approximately 50 undergraduates, 50 MA, and 20 doctoral students. It also provides course support to general education, school psychology and speech pathology and is involved in ongoing collaborative projects with the local public schools and University of Iowa’s medical school.

Qualifications: Required qualifications include 1) an earned doctorate in special education or related field; 2) evidence of scholarly productivity; 3) demonstrated ability to conduct quantitative research in special education; 4) evidence of excellent teaching skills; 5) potential for or experience in securing external funds for research, training, and/or program development; 6) experience in teacher education; 7) experience in teaching children with disabilities; and 8) ability to work collaboratively and with diverse populations.

Responsibilities: The successful applicant will be expected to maintain a robust program of empirical research, teach undergraduate and graduate courses in special education and advise undergraduate, MA, and PhD students. In addition, the candidate must secure external grant funding, participate in the activities of professional organizations and be involved with special education activities within the state.

Appointment: Nine-month, tenure-track appointment beginning August 2009.
