Boston University Position Openings: Dean and 2 Special Education faculty positions

Boston University invites nominations and applications for the
position of Dean of the School of Education. The University has begun
an exciting era in its history under the leadership of President
Robert A. Brown and Provost David K. Campbell. At this moment of
enormous opportunity, the School of Education seeks a dynamic,
innovative, and collaborative leader.

Established in 1918, Boston University’s School of Education serves a
diverse student body of 400 undergraduate and 600 graduate students,
112 of whom are pursuing the doctoral degree. It has 52 full-time
faculty (50% tenure/tenure-track), numerous adjunct faculty, and 40
staff. In addition to a significant focus on preparing education
professionals, the School is regarded highly for programs in the
fields of literacy, mathematics education, deaf studies,
international educational development, special education and science
education. It is further distinguished by its productive
partnerships with local school districts, most notably in Chelsea,
MA. Last year the School had an annual budget of $7 million and
generated approximately $2.14 million in sponsored research. For

Reporting directly to the Provost, the Dean’s principal
responsibilities will be: to optimize the school’s current strength
in teacher preparation through setting priorities and streamlining
programs; to raise the school’s profile nationally and
internationally through enhancing funded research and graduate
education; and to support continued faculty and school engagement
with schools and communities in the Boston metropolitan area and
beyond. In addition, the Dean leads development activities and acts
as the chief advocate for the School, building relationships within
the university and with external constituencies.

Boston University seeks an individual of distinguished scholarly
achievement, with a strong understanding of teacher education at
graduate and undergraduate levels, and a demonstrated commitment to
excellence in research, scholarship, and teaching. Ideal candidates
will have an understanding of the mission of a school of education
embedded in a comprehensive, Research I university, and will have
significant administrative experience at the department or decanal
level, as well as fund-raising and alumni relations experience. An
earned doctorate is required.

Boston University, with a total enrollment of more than 30,000 and a
faculty of more than 3,500 in its 17 schools and colleges, is the
fourth-largest independent university in the United States. The
University supports a large and diverse research program, with
sponsored research funding totaling over $300 million in 2005.

FACULTY POSITIONS in SPECIAL EDUCATION

The Department of Curriculum and Teaching at Boston University is
seeking qualified candidates for two positions in the Special
Education Program. Both positions are tenure/tenure track positions
at the Assistant or Associate Professor level. Responsibilities will
include teaching both undergraduate and graduate courses; advising
students; active engagement in scholarship; and service to the
university and professional community.

Applicants with expertise in the areas of educational research,
learning theory, impact of disabilities on learning, assessment of
learning abilities, and/or disproportionate representation of
culturally and linguistically diverse students in Special Education
are encouraged to apply. Candidates must have a doctorate in special
education, educational psychology, or a related field. We are
seeking candidates with experience in assessment and education of
students with mild to moderate disabilities, prior university
teaching experience, and a clear potential for establishing a strong
record of scholarship.
