The College of William & Mary School of Education seeks applicants for a tenure track position of assistant professor of Special Education (beginning August 2008). This faculty position will be located within the Curriculum and Instruction Area (C&I) which offers program emphases in undergraduate and graduate elementary and secondary teacher preparation as well as master’s emphases in gifted, reading, and special education. The Master of Arts in Education includes a challenging 13 month full-time graduate option for special education or general education preparation. Part-time options exist for practicing special educators.
At William and Mary we value teaching, scholarship, and service. Our philosophy of education reflects a commitment to inclusive practices that promote successful outcomes for all children and youth. As a collaborative program area, we also continue to examine how to best integrate inclusive practices and universally designed instruction throughout our elementary and secondary education curriculum. Our special education program emphasis is on preparing teachers to work with students who have mild/moderate disabilities and this position includes teaching future special and general educators.
We are excited to have candidates apply for this position who will actively engage in focused research. We are particularly interested in candidates whose research interests and experiences include educating children and youth from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds. Candidates will find colleagues at W&M who will support their research efforts and mentor their development. Faculty in the School of Education are active in the research community and in securing external funding to support research and instruction. Collaborative research and scholarship are valued as well as individual work. This position will also include opportunities to supervise master’s and doctoral research efforts.
Candidates will be excited to learn that the School of Education will be moving into a new, state of the art building within the next two years. This environment will offer technology support as well as establish a space that will support our collaborative culture, access to a variety of training and technical assistance centers, and on-site professional development.
