Position: The Special Education Program at The University of Iowa seeks an assistant professor who will join an accomplished faculty who are motivated to enhance and expand the Special Education Program.

Description: Special Education at The University of Iowa is housed in the Department of Teaching and Learning. The program serves approximately 50 undergraduates, 50 MA, and 25 doctoral students. In addition the program provides support to general education, school psychology, speech pathology and the medical school through a number of course offerings and collaborative programs. There are currently four full-time faculty who are very active scholars at the national level and provide high levels of service at the national and regional levels. The Special Education Program is seeking to extend their current graduate program. We are particularly interested in supporting faculty seeking to extend their research agenda through pursuit of extramural funding, development of exemplary doctoral candidates to assume positions at Research I institutions, and promoting teacher preparation through
excellence in teaching.

Qualifications: Required qualifications include (1) earned doctorate in special education, (2) demonstrated ability to conduct quantitative research in special education, (3) evidence of excellence in teaching, (4) experience teaching special education in elementary or secondary schools, (5) potential for attracting external funding, and (6) ability to work collaboratively and with diverse populations.

Desired qualifications include
(1) an established research agenda and publication record in special education, and (2) demonstrated ability to attract external funding.

Responsibilities: Depending on background and interest, teach undergraduate and graduate courses in special education; advise undergraduate, MA, and PhD students. In addition, the candidate must continue a robust personal research program; secure external grant funding; participate in the activities of professional organizations; and join an active and accomplished faculty in special education.

Appointment: Nine-month, tenure-track appointment beginning August 2008.
