Full-time Tenure Track Position in Special Education. Candidates for this position must possess a doctoral degree in special education or closely related field and must have demonstrated expertise in at least one of the following areas: mild disabilities, severe disabilities, applied behavior analysis, special education assessment, inclusive practices, technology, transition, or curriculum development. In addition, candidates should have knowledge of and experience with urban schools. Candidates will be expected to provide evidence of an established research agenda (e.g., copies of relevant publications, grant applications, etc.) as well as excellence in teaching (e.g., course evaluations, peer reviews of teaching, course syllabi, etc.) and must demonstrate familiarity with best practices in the field. Responsibilities will include teaching both graduate and undergraduate courses, maintaining an active program of research, participating in curriculum development that is responsive to new state standards, advising students, and serving on doctoral committees as appropriate. Under the headline of “Protest over special education draws parents from other schools” in the Lake Havasu (AZ, US) News Herald, Diana Parker reported that a group of parents gathered to express concern about the quality of special education provided to their children. Ms. Parker noted that parents, including Toni Salatti, stood outside a local high school with handmade signs complaining about the schools have too few qualified teaches, aides, as well as appropriate activities.
The [protest] organizers’ concerns center on the Student Development Center, the classroom for the high school’s most severely disabled students.
The class, with one teacher and one teacher’s aide, serves between 12 and 24 kids during the day, Salatti said. She and fellow parent Robin Flores, whose daughter, Mercedes, is in the class, don’t think that’s enough staff to meet the needs of students who require constant attention and suffer from a range of medical conditions.
“If something happens and the aide has to leave the room, that leaves the teacher alone with all those kids,” Salatti said.
Because of the shortage of experienced teachers and teachers’ aides, the students aren’t receiving proper instruction but are merely being kept busy until the day is over, Salatti said.

3. Deliver courses face-to-face and also through synchronous and asynchronous online instruction.
4. Design/refine program to ensure educators will have knowledge, skills, and dispositions to provide appropriate and effective instruction for students with disabilities in inclusive schools.
5. Collaborate with faculty in other education specialties and professional disciplines and with practitioners in professional development schools as well as other public schools and community agencies.
6. Advise graduate students and supervise practica/internships.
7. Supervise doctoral student progress in the program and dissertation research.
8. Implement a productive research agenda related to special education.
9. Write proposals to secure external funding to support teaching, research and service efforts.
10. Provide service to the College, the University, the State, the public schools, and the discipline.
Starting Date: August 16, 2008

Position Summary:
The Department of SERSP in the College of Education at the University of Arizona is seeking a tenured senior-level faculty member to serve as Department Head. The department offers degrees at the baccalaureate, masters, educational specialist, and doctoral levels to a diverse body of 100 undergraduates and 300 graduate students. The department consists of 17 full-time faculty, 26 adjunct faculty, and 13 staff members.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Supervise and manage the department’s administrative operations as well as provide leadership and open communication. Work collaboratively to maintain partnerships with area and state educators and to make programs responsive to community, state and national needs.
Qualifications:
• A doctoral degree and expertise in special education, rehabilitation, or school psychology
• Strong record of teaching and scholarship (including a record of funded research and publications) sufficient for appointment as a tenured associate or full professor.

DLD dissertation award

DLD Dissertation Award for Outstanding Doctoral Level Research
(Deadline January 15, 2008)
The Division for Learning Disabilities (DLD) within the Council for Exceptional Children (CEC) announces its annual competition for outstanding doctoral-level research in the field of learning disabilities. The purposes of the award are to encourage excellence in doctoral level research and to recognize quality research that contributes to the field of learning disabilities. Refer to TeachingLD.org for additional information.
The Award consists of:
a) A $500 cash award;
b) Up to an additional $500 for travel to receive the award at the CEC Annual Convention;
c) Free one-year membership in CEC and DLD;
d) An opportunity to present the research at the CEC Annual Convention;
e) An invitation to submit the research for publication in the Division journal, Learning Disabilities Research & Practice.
Timeline
Applications for the award must be received no later than January 15, 2008. The recipient will be selected and notified by March 15, 2008.
Eligibility
The competition is open to individuals who have met the eligibility requirements during the two-year period preceding October 1st of each application year. Eligibility will be verified through the applicant’s degree granting institution to protect all applicants, the universities, and DLD. To be eligible, the applicant must have received the doctoral degree between the dates specified, or have received approval by the dissertation committee of the final written form of the dissertation between the dates specified
The competition is intended to recognize doctoral students who have focused their research on learning disabilities or who have conducted related research having clear implications for the field of learning disabilities. Studies employing any research methodology appropriate to the research question(s) addressed are encouraged (e.g., experimental, ethnographic, historical, or survey).
Application
Each applicant must submit an application including:
- an appropriate title page including the dissertation title, author, date of dissertation, approval or awarding of degree, degree-granting institution, name and dissertation committee chair, and applicant’s current address and phone number.
- four copies of a dissertation abstract, not to exceed 150 words, and
- four copies of a manuscript not to exceed 25 manuscript pages (not including references, tables and figures) outlining and summarizing the research, using APA guidelines. Manuscripts submitted for this competition may already have been submitted/accepted for publication. If submitted or accepted, appropriate referencing must be provided.

Position: The Special Education Program at The University of Iowa seeks an assistant professor who will join an accomplished faculty who are motivated to enhance and expand the Special Education Program.
Description: Special Education at The University of Iowa is housed in the Department of Teaching and Learning. The program serves approximately 50 undergraduates, 50 MA, and 25 doctoral students. In addition the program provides support to general education, school psychology, speech pathology and the medical school through a number of course offerings and collaborative programs. There are currently four full-time faculty who are very active scholars at the national level and provide high levels of service at the national and regional levels. The Special Education Program is seeking to extend their current graduate program. We are particularly interested in supporting faculty seeking to extend their research agenda through pursuit of extramural funding, development of exemplary doctoral candidates to assume positions at Research I institutions, and promoting teacher preparation through

Qualifications: Required qualifications include (1) earned doctorate in special education, (2) demonstrated ability to conduct quantitative research in special education, (3) evidence of excellence in teaching, (4) experience teaching special education in elementary or secondary schools, (5) potential for attracting external funding, and (6) ability to work collaboratively and with diverse populations.
