Sprout sprouts again
By JohnLloyd on Jan. 12, 2007.
Sprout, which is a not-for-profit focused on promoting growth among individuals with developmental disabilities, has been around since the late ’70s. One of the fun events sponsored by Sprout is a filmfest and the plans are circulating now.
Sprout Film Festival is one of the reasons. It’s a relatively new (2003) activity, but
We invite you to experience film and video related to the field of developmental disabilities.
People with developmental disabilities as subjects and performers remain marginalized in the media. The Sprout Film Festival aims to raise their profile by showcasing works of all genres featuring this population.
The main focus is on individuals with mental retardation, but the festival is not limited to only those developmental disabilities. There are also films about autism. The films feature, performances, animations, artists, and they also include documentaries about disabilities.
Although the festival is held in New York City, there is also a (for fee) touring version.
The schedule’s available at this link> and more general information can be had from the Sprout Web site.
