Below is an announcement for a Special Education faculty member at
the assistant professor level. The Special Education Program has
attracted new faculty members in the past couple of years to replace
individuals who have retired. Thus, it is a place for this
individual to be actively involved in program development. Please

DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATIONAL PSYCHOLOGY AND SPECIAL EDUCATION

Assistant Professor (Special Education)
To Begin August 16, 2007

Description of Position:

Assistant Professor specializing in Special Education in the
Department of Educational Psychology and Special Education.

Responsibilities of Position:

1. Teach undergraduate and graduate level courses in special
education in one or more of the following areas: a) mild and moderate
disabilities, b) classroom-based assessment, c) curricular and
instructional adaptations and modifications, d) strategies or
supports for students in natural environments, or e) administration.
Additional teaching will include advanced seminars in a specialty
area of the person’s choosing.
2. Advise graduate students in special education and serve on
master’s and doctoral degree committees.
3. Maintain a record of scholarly productivity by initiating
research leading to publication in national peer-reviewed journals.
4. Seek and secure external funds to sponsor research, training,
and service activities.
5. Serve the public and constituencies of the department,
college, and university as approved/assigned.

Requirements of Candidates:

1. The rank of Assistant Professor requires the completed
doctorate in special education or a closely related discipline and
potential for scholarly research that leads to publication in
nationally refereed journals. Applicants who have completed all
requirements except the dissertation will be considered. If official
evidence of completion of all requirements for doctorate is not
received by August 15, 2007, the position offered will be a term
appointment with the rank of Instructor at a lower salary.
2. Preference will be given to applicants who have professional
experience in one or more of the following areas: academic
instructional modifications and accommodations, classroom-based
assessment, administration and supervision, assistive technology,
classroom and ecological assessment, or direct instruction
methodology either separate or in combination with background in
early childhood special education.
3. Prior university teaching experience and evidence of
successful peer-reviewed scholarship is preferred.
4. Experience, interest and potential for extramural funding is preferred.
5. Illinois state law requires oral proficiency in the English language.

Appointment and Salary:

This is a continuing tenure-track appointment. Appointment is on a
nine-month academic year basis. An additional summer appointment may
be possible contingent upon funding and student demand. Salary is
commensurate with experience and background. Progress in rank and
salary will require demonstrations of productivity in research and
publication, teaching, and service.

November 15, 2006, and continue until filled.

Effective Date of Employment:

August 16, 2007.
