The Program develops candidates’ capacity and proficiency to educate children with special needs in a range of settings, and seeks to strengthen students’ abilities to succeed in general education classrooms. Program graduates are prepared to act as cultural brokers and facilitators of positive outcomes for children with disabilities and their families through communication and information that lead to self-advocacy and self- empowerment. The Program highlights the need for collaborative, thoughtful and flexible choices in pedagogy and assessment. True to the aims of special education, candidates appreciate and promote the unique gifts, strengths and creativity of all children and work to support students’ development leading to their optimal academic performance and full participation in society.
